Camp ~Day 4

We went to an Alpaca Farm today. It was amazing! A sweet girl named Shannon was our guide. She is a 17 year old homeschooler who works on the alpaca farm. She was so fun to be with. This one with Ellie is actually a llama. There are a couple on the farm. Here are the alpacas. They are in what they call the inner circle. There is a swath of land around the alpaca center where they keep donkeys.
Us "Why donkeys?"
Shannon "To protect the alpacas from predators."
Us "What predators?"
Shannon "Oh, coyotes, bears, mountain lions."
Us "We were told there were no mountain lions!"
Shannon "There was a lion attack here 5 years ago, killed all but one of the alpacas. Last year we saw one all the time, hunting from a cliff, but he never threatened the alpacas."

Hmmmmmmm. Rangers are stinkers.

This is the table they strap the alpacas to in order to shear them. Drew Preston and Ellie look happier than the alpacas would.

Ellie fell in love with Spider. The alpacas don't like to be touched on the head, but they like their necks rubbed. They are SO soft!

Ellie and Spider again.

Feeding the donkey.

Goats, also to help with predators. Only these little guys are decoys. Goats are cheaper that alpacas! Thankfully none have had to sacrifice themselves yet.
