May 2011

On a spur of the moment trip (we went to Virginia to see some military friends who were getting promoted and then moving to Japan-awesome ceremony and so neat seeing them again) we decided to visit Chincoteague, Virgina. For those of you who read Misty of Chincoteague by Margurite Henry, you'll recognize the area and story. This first picture is a door I liked. I became quite smitten with doors while we were in Europe, I need to do something clever with all my pics. This is "Heat Wave", one of Misty's great-great-great grandchildren. We saw her at a Pony Center on Chincoteague Island. We didn't get to see the museum, closed this time of year, where they keep the actual Misty, stuffed, of course. The man at the center said it was a good thing we didn't see her because she's been redone and moved so many times she looked like a cow. So there you are.

We were told not to try to pet the ponies. We obeyed.

This is the actual firehouse from the books. The fire department owns the ponies on the VA side of the island of Assateague and sell the ponies every year on Pony Penning Day in July.

This is where the actual Misty put her hoofprints in the sidewalk in front of the movie theater at the opening of her movie.

Ducks and ducklings everywhere.

Make way for ducklings!

My own wild ponies on the beach of Assateague.

Wild kids.

Wild parents!

Like this one.

They love each other!!

Well........
